Superheroes have only been on Earth for only a short while, but when they came they made an impact that will never be matched. Who could match Superman, the Kryptonite Son, a savior? How about an Amazonian woman that is literally a Goddess? Or a man that doesn't have powers but studies his enemies and his allies; he knows what to do if something goes wrong.
It's not for certain when "Superheroes" picked off of the ground; it could have been when more villains started populating more cities. After all if there were no villains there would be no need for heroes. Superman appeared fourteen years ago in Metropolis, and it wasn't like he couldn't catch attention. He was a flying man in tights with a cape, it was hard to miss. The papers were flooded with news about Metropolis's hero, the world's savior.
It was nearly 18 months after Superman's first appearance than Lex Luthor appeared as a threat. He was Superman's first enemy and to this day he remains the high priority to Superman. He's obviously insane, but has resources that keep him only in jail for a small while. So it was really no surprise when he got out a little over a year after Superman put him there. Of course Superman had been busy with other things as well; after Lex Luthor got locked up more threats appeared. Most of them aliens, but one person can only handle so much, even if he is Superman.
When Lex Luthor broke out of jail, it was more than Superman could handle at the moment. Someone had been watching him fight his enemies and when things became too much for him, she stepped in. Yes, she was Wonder Woman, only newly left from the Paradise Isle; she came to Metropolis because one of the first things she heard was about Superman. She wanted to investigate the city where the Man of Steel lived, right as she arrived it was only a matter of days before the city was being destroyed and Superman was fighting against a dozen of his enemies. At once.
So Wonder Woman stepped in and she, frankly, saved his butt. Even though Superman is Superman, he's not invulnerable. Of course neither is Wonder Woman, but the two of them together are an unstoppable team. Once they fought together, they were barely seen without the other. Of course there were rumors going everywhere, about the two of them being together. However many believed that nothing was going on due to the "I spent the night with Superman" article that appeared in the Daily Planet a few months before Wonder Woman appeared. Everyone believed that Lois Lane and Superman were an item. However there was no follow-up story after the appearance of Wonder Woman.
Superman and Wonder Woman worked together for a good while, three years, and everything seemed at a standstill. No other heroes were coming out, villains were afraid to mess with the famous duo. Then in Gotham City, a city with a much higher crime and murder rate than Metropolis, a hero showed up. Not one with powers, at least not that was visible to the public, but a human. A human fighting crime.
Gotham City's Dark Knight was infamous rather than famous; many thought he was a threat, as he was more of a vigilante than a superhero. He didn't come out during the day; he didn't ask the cops for missions, but instead took the law into his own hands and did what he thought was best with the criminals. No one wanted to be like Batman, people feared Batman instead of viewing him as an icon.
It remained only the three heroes for about a year longer, they never truly interacted and what they did do with each other was not a partnership but a toleration to get the job done. Then Batman brought a young boy on a mission in Gotham City, this boy who referred to himself as Robin was nothing compared to Batman. He had gymnastics skills, but he was only a child and within the first mission he got himself hurt fighting a few thugs. Robin disappeared for a long while and many people who had heard about the boy had thought he had been killed, but he hadn't he had been forced to train before he would go out on another mission. It was a start.
The alliance with Robin opened Batman up in a way. He was still weary of people but he was more willing to trust others, and he accepted that he couldn't do his job alone. That's when the alliance was formed, the Trinity.
Many believe that's when the Superhero Era began, because once they began working together other heroes showed up. Aliens, meta-humans, and even ordinary humans began fighting the cause the Trinity was working for. Not many years after the Justice League of America formed, and people began to take of sidekicks, young teenagers that were gifted or just wanted to help out.
It is a dangerous world out there, and they knew that and they wanted to help out. The courageousness, the loyalty and the commitment these men and women had is what started it all. The Superhero Era.
